Sweat beads inbued with the skin of his face, as stifled pain shifted from his ribs to the soles of his feet. Pressed firmly into the ground, his legs spread apart carefully as his hands took hold of a wooden training pole.
His eyes never left the frame of his opponent. Teeth clenched as he focused his energy on how to respond, he looked around the two of them; several people were watching from the distance, but would return to their normal activities.
Bruising covered his body from the intense training, and he learned a great deal, but not enough to survive. He was still healing, but he also couldn't wait anymore.
"I'm tired of getting kicked around," he growled under his breath. "What I lack in speed, I have to make up for in strength!"
Pushing himself from the ground, he leaped at the woman, his pole swinging forward as he drove his weight into her as an attempt to push her back and hinder her movements. "You can't dodge everything, you know!"

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams His movements were shaky. Amateur. From the beginning, even with disregard to his hindered state of fractured ribs, she could tell that there was a lack of experience with his movements. During no time in their youth or while she was away from him had he ever practiced the use of a weapon - and she could tell.
"Your posture is bad. Turn yourself sideface and use your sword as an extension of your arm. It is not separate from you," she crossed her own wooden pole over her chest. "Now on your feet! When you find yourself across a dangerous opponent, there is no running. They will catch you. Fear cuts deeper than swords, and if you are afraid, you're better off dead!"
Her foot clicked against the dusty gravel of the red earth surrounding them, watching the expressions that phased onto Cas's face. "Remember what happened at Castle Town. Remember the burdens you carry because you could not effectuate proper skill. Every loss is a lesson. Every lesson hardens you. But not every loss will allow you to live."
The words her father spoke upon her training echoed through her. Perhaps this was the next step in her journey; while she had decided to stay back to help with relief in Kakariko, Cassius had been transferred there to heal. She was a bit surprised for him to ask her to help train, but this may be what destiny was wishing for.
Everyone should learn to defend themselves. The able bodied should learn to kill monsters.
He began charging at her, and she firmly rest her feet against the soil, staying still as he approached with brute force before swiftly twirling out of the way. One foot dipping back as she spun her arm around, the pole quickly flung beneath Cassius's legs to pull his feet out from under him, sending him to the ground.
"You do not see when you attack! You're using your eyes for direction, but you don't watch for body language - or where they may move next!" She brought her sword up, but kept it pointed at his chest. She held the training sword even, a perfect, undaunted horizon; always leveled with the nose, just as her father had taught her.
"Try again. If you can knock me down, I'll buy dinner," she winked with a determined simper.

He fumbled onto the ground as his mouth kissed the dusty soil, followed by coughing and rolling onto his side. He groaned in pain, before the words played over in his head and he went silent.
She was being tougher than usual. Even when they were kids, there was always a lighter tone in the air, followed by a playful force. This was... different, as though her voice was coarse out of volition. While there was a desire for his improvement hinted in her words, they were brusque and perhaps spiteful.
Still, he turned to look at her, wooden blade pointed at his flattened chest as he laid on his back with his arms up. He was frozen in place, his mind flashing back to the city, when the dragon had looked right at him before unleashing its fiery breath.
Had Ashei not intervened, he would have died there. Should Ashei be an enemy now, he would be dead. Every wasted second in this training could be paralleled to a moment where he would die in real life.
"It's never enough for you, is it?" he sighed.
Jolting to his feet as he rolled from the reach of her weapon, he brought his forth and clashed it against her own, attempting to force their weight downward, while pulling back and parrying against Ashei's blade. With every click, he tried to strike her, becoming creative with his speed and where he aimed.
But nothing seemed to be good enough.
Annoyed, he pushed harder, and harder, and finally he used all of his might into one final strike before taking a step back and bracing for what was to follow.
"Try knocking me down again, will you!? What's the point in pushing you out when you're just gonna get back up and try this anyways?"

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams His movement hinted toward an irritation to her words. She kept herself in place for a moment as she watched to see how he would react to the pressure of trying to escape her reach from the ground.
Suddenly, he was rolling to his feet, and before she knew it, she was forced to jump back as their wooden blades clashed. He tried to be swift; to be unpredictable, but his movements were not fast enough. "It's like I said when we started; perhaps your injury is hindering your true potential. You're not going to get far with your lessons if you're distracted by physical pain!"
But despite her ability to defend against each stroke of his blade, the force became more energetic and she was finding it harder to stay in place. She was skilled, yes, but he was noticeably stronger than her due to their height and weight difference. He could pick her up at ease, and she wouldn't be able to stay grounded for long.
Before she knew it, he was pushing her back, her feet skidding against the dirt as she remained calm and focused on the direction of his blade. He was more frustrated than usual; perhaps the words were working. They were giving something to linger on with every mistake he would make.
If he would learn from his mistakes. This time, he was taking the defensive route. His aggression and offensive tactics were amateur at best, and she was able to predict them, but now he was demanding her to approach him instead.
A bold move, of course. She had finally broken a sweat after his blunt force that pushed her further away, but she began to slowly circle him, looking at his stance, how he held the blade, and where to go from there. Should she go easy? Should she try her hardest?
Perhaps somewhere int he middle was a better idea. Readying herself, she swiftly moved in, her weight bouncing from foot to foot as she hovered from one spot to another - her movements were scattered and his eyes would be forced to follow her left and right and left and right and--
Suddenly, she was skidding across the ground and her body went low, as though she was diving backwards while her feet dragged her forward and she was ducking to get through a tight area. Her blade moved forward to try and swing at his feet again, an attempt to trip him.

He waited for the right moment to attack, but couldn't think of how to execute it. He did everything he could to watch her body language, but the nervousness was settling in. This is exactly what she was saying would happen, and his fear would undo him.
He straightened out his hands as he waited for her to approach, and suddenly, she was darting right for him. His eyes went from her feet, to her blade, to her movement, to her eyes. Taking them all into consideration, he took a deep breath.
As she began to slide out under him, he lifted his one foot and twirled about, letting it lift so it would miss the momentum of her blade. Once landing once more, his foot would them move for her wooden pole, to step it into the ground with his letter boot, holding it in place.
His own blade pointed at her carefully, his eyes narrowed as he looked over his work. Now she was the one on the ground, and he was the one who was hovering over her.
"Check mate," he smirked. "You owe me dinner."

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams Once again, she expected him to not respond correctly, and as her blade brushed up against his feet, she began to chuckle. "Well, I can't say we didn't try, but maybe next time--wait!"
She halted in her thoughts as he suddenly leaped over her blade before pressing his foot into the wooden pole to keep it in place. His own weapon was now faced against her, pointing at her to stay on the ground and she was frozen in place.
There was a moment of silence between the two of them for a moment as their eyes were simply locked into a standstill in time. For a moment, she couldn't think, her mind trying to rap around the sudden change of pace as he so quickly adapted to the situation. What did she do wrong? What caused him to act differently than before?
Finally, her eyes closed in acceptance as she smiled lightly, hand letting go of the weapon before clasping with her other. "Well, that was nice," he started off. "Very impressive footing. I don't know where that came from, but whatever it was, keep doing that."
Looking around for a moment, she took note of the magenta sky falling over the reddened cliffs. The sun was out of view and it would surely be getting dark soon. "I say we take a break for the night and continue this training tomorrow morning. We can head back to my campsite for your 'free meal', yeah?"
She slowly got up, brushing the dust from her clothes as she looked around for a moment. No one around that she recognized, meaning that it would just be their own company it seemed. She began walking back toward the village where most relief workers were settled up in their camps, waiting for Cassius to follow in silence.
It was strange; the two of them didn't really talk much over the last few years, despite her return to Castle Town. Perhaps their differences were so great they just found no need for each other's presence anymore. And yet, things were different now, and he was showing more passion for the art of war, and she couldn't help, but....
"I have to ask," he murmured quietly as they continued to walk. "In all the time that I had been away, what did you do? You never talked much about making friends or your family at all in your letters..."
She knew about his recent work with being a blacksmith's apprentice, and yet she barely knew just how settled in his training he was. From what she recalled during the dragon fight... he apparently had made a sword for her.
Why would you make a sword for someone you haven't seen in months?
They arrived back to her campsite where she sat down beside her fire pit, quickly bundling some wood before starting a flame for warmth. She had some items in her small containers which she could make a few small meals with, and she held them out to Cas. "Fish, rabbit, or cuccoo?"

He did it. He actually did it! The look in his eyes was enough for Ashei to see that even he barely knew what he was doing. It happened so fast, he wondered if it was simply a reaction out of panic, or if his brain and actually sorted out the technique in the heat of the moment.
Still, when Ashei had gotten up and offered for their dinner of the night, he felt a bit of relief that they were done. He wasn't sure if he was going to be able to replicate that again any time soon (or ever).
The two of them began to walk, but there was silence between them. He couldn't get it out of his head - that stunned expression she had when he had first pinned her to the ground. There was a shared moment of appreciation, but it didn't stop himself from feeling slightly... unmotivated.
This is how it always went, didn't it? The two of them would try to rekindle their friendship, but it would just hurt too much, and they'd continuously avoid each other or make excuses as to why they couldn't hang out.
Maybe she thought she was the only one trying to get away, but he was too. He drowned himself in his studies with his master, and with her constantly changing locations, it wasn't easy for them to keep in touch. Eventually, he was the one who gave up on trying to write back.
"Huh?" he finally responded as she asked about their time away from each other. He gave a nervous shrug, lips pursing as he tried to think about it. "I honestly... didn't really have many friends. And my family was too disappointed in my career path. I ended up shadowing Lawrence full time and learned a great deal from him. Now, I'd say I'm almost as good as he is."
He smiled a bit at the last part. "I make weapons for a living now. Great weapons. I learned ways to refine metal to make it stronger than ever - and the enchantments make them unique. It's a signature of my master and I."
They arrived to the campfire and he sat down slowly, thinking more on the subject. "I guess while you were off learning how to use a weapon, I was more interested in learning how it was made. With all the damage in each of the villages though, maybe it's a good thing I picked up the hobby. My work is going to be needed now more than ever."
she held out the different options. At first, he wasn't sure what to choose. Food was scarce these days, and whatever he was offered, he was glad to have. But now given the choice in front of him, he had no idea. "Uh.... rabbit, sure." he said, laughing nervously.
Letting his hand run through his hair, he looked up to the star speckled sky - the sun was so low against the horizon that a deep purple engulfed the heavens as the shimmery stars appeared overtime.
"I'm taking this seriously, Ashei. None of your training is being taken for granted. I don't... want to be useless anymore."

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams She couldn't help but be impressed by his level of dedication to the art of smithing. Listening to him talk about his passion for it had brought ease to Ashei for a moment - she didn't remember the last time she had seen him light up like this. Years have passed.
He seemed to have a pretty good knowledge on what it meant to build a weapon then though, and he was right; that would be a very useful skill in the future battles to come. With most of the shops being out of commission, he would be able to find business easily if he advertised his top quality forging.
"I see," she nodded with a smile. She set aside the containers that she wouldn't be using for the night before dropping a few rabbit legs into a pot which she then set over the fire. "The weapon that you were using in the dragon fight... it was made for me?" she inquired.
She didn't want to ask too many questions about it - especially since now he was trying to learn how to fight, he was going to need it more than she did. Quite honestly, she wasn't ready to give up the sword she was using already. It was given to her by her father.
Her father.
Suddenly, her heart sunk a bit, and her mind clouded out most of the conversation in that moment. Her mind became numb as she took a deep breath, trying to shake out of it quickly before looking back up at Cassius.
There were too many things on her mind, and she found it hard to concentrate. Each moment was like a new skeleton in her closet; the masquerade, the colossus, the shadow dragon, and now the death of her father. She let out another sigh before stuffing her face into her scarf.
A lot of important people were expecting important things from her now; whether because of her skill with her sword, or her persistence to get rid of these monsters, she wasn't sure. But a lot of people were counting on her to clear out more of these things, and the burdens were a bit heavy on her.
"Would you mind... if I asked for your advice on something?" she waited a moment before looking at him carefully. Her mouth was dry with apprehension and suddenly averted his gaze as her lips began to move. "What would you do if you were so moved by someone, their actions were all you could think about? But then you come to learn you had no idea who they were? Or that this was all pointless? Or that maybe they never cared to begin with?"
It was heavy, and it was weighing on her. But with everything that had happened, there were many parallels to her life this eluded to. Everyone she ever knew seemed to become a stranger to her. They were all grown up and reuniting and yet it was as though she was relearning their names and faces.

"Oh, yeah..." he remembered that the blade he used was originally meant for her. "Honestly, since the dragon fight, I forgot about that but I--well--you know, that isn't even my best work. You deserve a weapon worthy of my better skill," he nodded, but as he turned to look at her, he noticed a shift in her gaze. Her chin was bunched into the rook of her neck, hidden behind the scarf.
"Hey... are you okay?" he asked quietly, watching her movement carefully. There was a long silence between them again, and he felt his anxiety slowly start to tighten around his heart. Each beat felt heavy and pained, as though it was pounding into his ribs.
He wanted her advice on something, which slightly took him back in surprise. "Oh, uh... yeah, sure, I can try," he said slowly. He honestly didn't know how to answer. To him, Ashei was always the one with the answers - always knowing what she wanted and what path to follow. Seeing her as lost as she had been for the past several days was so... unsettling.
Her words were mysterious, and he couldn't place who or what she could have been talking about. He narrowed his brows as he pondered on it for a moment, but he couldn't place what would sadden Ashei like this. Surely it wasn't him; he hadn't changed that much. Who else would have been that close to her though? Her father's death didn't seem to be eluded by her words in any way, so it couldn't have been that...
Unless...
His hand slammed down on the ground in frustration as he tried to snap for her attention. His eyes became direct and cold, watching hers carefully as heat began to grip his flesh in frustration.
"Who?" he asked calmly. "What did you do? And with who? Did they hurt you? Did you love them? Did they leave you for someone else; you know I'll rip out their lungs, right?"
Violence aside, he could see that someone had hurt her. And he didn't like when people took advantage of her. Crossing his arms, he let out a sigh in defeat because he knew she wouldn't give him up that easily.
"Well, if you're that hung up on it, honestly I'd just try to look for better qualities in other people. People are always going to disappoint you, but you just have to find who disappoints you the least, I guess."
Oh, he was going to kill whoever hurt her.

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams "Whoa, hold on a second!" she growled, her face ghosting over as she lifted her chin to look at him. The anger reflecting from his direct gaze made her unsettled as he began going on a tangent about who or what happened. "You're taking it out of context!"
Well, at least she could say that not much had changed about him then. For as long as they have been friends, he's always been the defensive one whenever someone would hurt or try to pick on her. She sighed, rolling her eyes slightly before shaking her head.
"It wasn't like that. I haven't even explained the whole story, but if you're going to immediately jump the heat like that, then I shouldn't even bother," she grumbled as she crossed her arms tightly. After peering into the cooking pot, she went back into her bags and pulled out some spices and vegetables to throw in, stirring them around with a wooden spoon after.
"I doubt you could rip out their lungs anyways. I don't even know who this guy is," she admitted sheepishly. Come to think of it, she wasn't really even sure how to explain this in the first place, and she was inevitably set up for failure trying to wrap his head around something as... mature as that.
Really, any person she showed genuine interest in was a rival for Cassius, and she knew that. Maybe that was why she never really found interest in dating...
"It's not what you think though--it's not like I just hooked up with some random guy I just met because he seduced me--or--or--" she stopped for a moment as her eyes grew small. She went quiet for a moment, gaze fixed to the ground as it started to unravel before her.
"Actually... it's exactly how it sounds. Whoops."

His eyes watched hers carefully, and he tried his best not to let the anger set further. Her words were like a blur, fading around him as he lost focus on the reality before him. The pulsating of his heart clouded his mind, and he focused on that.
Why was he like this? Why did this have to happen every time she spoke of someone else? She made it incredibly clear she felt nothing more than a friendship for him.
It tore him apart, and he thought of her every day. No one compared to her, and no man was worthy of her. And even though the feelings would fade as time passed, the moment they began to speak again, it all flooded him again.
"Heh," he let out a sheepish laugh, closing his eyes. Swallowing hard, his hands gripped against the gravel beneath him and he took a deep breath. "That's a little bit risky, don't you think? He could have really hurt you, Ash. You're lucky he didn't take advantage of you."
At least he was good at pretending it didn't hurt.
It seemed rather out of character for her, at least from what he remembered of her. Going to the masquerade? It didn't seem like her kind of scene... and falling for some dude in a mask over drinks and dancing?
"I never took you for the type to give into all that girly romance stuff I guess. Why did you go in the first place?"

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams That one stung a little. Sometimes she wondered just how oblivious Cas was to her as a person; so blinded by what he admired of her but ignoring every other aspect. She took a deep breath, pulling the pot from the fire before stirring it a bit once more.
"Well... if you listened more when we were kids, you'd know I always liked that kind of stuff. At least, behind closed doors, anyways. Remember the dress my father bought me for my birthday when we were 10? And how excited I was to be able to wear something so nice without having to sit at a conference all day?"
Pouring some of the stew into a small bowl, she nudged it in Cassius's direction for him to eat. Pursing her lips, she looked down into her own empty bowl, her finger tracing along the edge of the wood. "Remember my collection of fairy tales? And how they were my favorite stories to read and play pretend?" she looked up at him seriously.
"Of course you probably don't. You never bothered to actually listen to what I liked because you were too busy chasing off anyone else trying to be our friend," she grumbled in annoyance. "It's not like I just ran off with this guy and decided to risk it all for some kind of romantic fantasy. I'm not that stupid."
He didn't even have to say it, but she knew that he was thinking it.

He did it again. He opened his mouth and said something stupid, and Ashei was angry again. Her mention of his bad habits as a kid weren't lies, and he knew that. It's why they stopped writing. He knew he was just holding her back, and she was too nice to leave.
"I didn't know you cared so much that I listened more," he admitted. "I thought I was more or less a nuisance you dealt with because you felt bad. I took advantage of it, and I apologize."
He looked up at her again, his dull, cloudy eyes searching hers. Her eyes were a hickory as rich as the earth’s soil; stained with the color of hot chocolate on a cold, winter night that wraps around you like a blanket; engulfs you in its warmth and makes you feel at home.
Nevertheless, her eyes possess sorrow that placed a melancholic veil, which cloaked her; it seemed as if it made the happiness in her eyes matte.
"I never said you were stupid!" he immediately snapped, defending himself immediately. "Ashei, you do this really funny thing where you put words in my mouth that I never even said. I wasn't aware that those kind of things mattered so much to you, and I'm sorry. I wasn't going to berate you for possibly finding someone finally--"
He stopped for a moment, shaking his head and looking down at the bowl she had made for him. "I'm just worried about you. I don't want you to rush into something you aren't ready for."

To restore the world, cut ‘way the seams She sighed. Near the end of their friendship from the first time, this is exactly what happened - jumping to conclusions and constant arguments. She felt a little guilty at his admission though; did he really think that she didn't see him a as a close friend?
"That's the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard," she looked at him carefully. "You realize that you were my first friend right? No one wanted to play with me because I was 'too rough for a girl', but you didn't care. You really think that I'd push you aside that easily just because we have different opinions on our hobbies?"
Finally, she began to pour some of the soup into her own bowl. She took a moment to compose her thoughts properly, and she found it hard to respond. Despite Cassius's impulsive reactions, she knew he really did care. She just wished that he wouldn't focus all of his energy on her. There had to be someone out there who didn't think he was insufferable.
At least, that's what she thought when they were younger. Look at him now; all grown up. Trying to learn how to fight. Wanting to take down monsters. He even had a very unique skill for smithing! He was handsome, there was no reason for anyone to think otherwise. The truth was, she just couldn't see him in any way other than a friend.
"I know you care," she started before taking a small spoon and lifting it to her lips as she tasted the food. "I never doubted that you did. I just wish you wouldn't waste your time on someone like me."

It was true, he knew that. He just had a hard time believing it sometimes. He always felt like a burden in her life though - always getting her into trouble or having to call her when he made a mess of things.
That's what friends were for though, right? Ashei was always the blunt type, so even if she came off as annoyed, he knew he shouldn't take it to heart.
He thought for a long moment, the spoon meeting his lips as he swallowed on the food tentatively. He wanted to do something to make up for his constant failures to her as a friend.
"There's a forge here, right?" he asked finally, not looking up from the bowl in his hands. "If there is... I'm going to make you a sword. One that your father would be proud you carry. Make it the new heirloom of the Vitalis name."
