Zelda laid in her ruined bed with a book bearing a fantasy-sounding title in her arms and a very distant look on her face, perhaps lost in the afformentioned book. She was 'wearing' her sheets for lack of a better word, her dress not having survived her treatment and her body not having the strength to move about and fetch herself something more dignified. If one paid attention, though, they might notice she wasn't actually reading that book. Her eyes weren't moving along with the words but rather staring blankly into the pages without focus. The page never turned and her bookmark laid untouched from the last time she'd closed it. She hadn't even taken it out of the book yet. Zelda had been trying to distract herself from what happened for some time now, but for once in her life she could not motivate herself to read. She'd never felt this sort of abject hopelessness before. A grim thought haunted the back of her mind, though she did her best to ignore it. What was she to do? Her kingdom fared little better than she did. A blade had been run through its heart. Her throne was destroyed. For all intents and purposes, she'd been defeated by an usurper.
She should not be alive.
But... she was. She was alive, if not to stew in her failures. What a bitter victory that was. Who else was alive? Had the princess of twilight made it out? Was that dragon still murdering her people? Would she have to take her bow back from Seyka's corpse? The knowledge that she could do nothing about any of these things hurt her in ways her own wounds could not. There would be no peace for her tonight. Perhaps not tomorrow either. She wasn't entirely certain shew ould survive to see the second night. The princess gaze lifted to survey her room. Had she picked up on something just now..? |

Midna could not hide forever.
After the battle with Nimue and Morrigan, she fled with Alex and the injured Princess, but left them soon after in a panic. Distraught and riddled with all sorts of emotions, she couldn't face the truth of the situation. It was hard to take it in, the fact that she was the cause of Hyrule's strife. The darkness followed her wherever she went. But perhaps such was the fate of the Twili.
After meeting with Alex again, she seemed to be more calm and at least knew that there was one person who didn't blame her. And even if Zelda blamed her, Midna could not, in good conscious, let the Princess suffer. She had been all but courteous to Midna since finding out about her. The least Midna could do was apologize and lend a hand wherever she could... if she could ever be forgiven.
The imp slipped through the shadows, undetected by the remaining Knights that stood guard about the Castle. Though their numbers were limited, the safety of their princess was their priority and had Midna been anything but a Twili, she would have been denied access. But she slipped into the princess' room with ease and observed from the shadows.
Zelda looked a disheveled mess, but at least she had the strength to sit up and read. Midna suddenly could not find the strength to move closer to the princess. The weight of her guilt had come crashing back, and she stared at the princess with tears welling in her eyes. But then she caught sight of the princess' focus shifting, and almost immediately landed in Midna's direction. The Hylians had great perception, as she had learned from her studies, because they werw the Goddess' children and were blessed with the ability to hear the Goddesses. Midna was a lowly creature, a banished being, and so why would the princess not be able to detect her?
Midna started to come out of the shadows, if only to reveal to Zelda who it was that entered, but she did keep half of her body in the dark. She was not yet ready to fully reveal herself. She wasn't ready to reveal the aches her heart was going through. With a half-hearted chuckle, it was hard to muster anything other than a sob, Midna turned the page of Zelda's book with a small point of her finger.
"What'cha reading?" she questioned, "Anything good?"

It took a good long moment for Zelda to recognition to enter Zelda's eyes, a long moment during which the thought of what else might be lurking in the shadows crossed her mind. ...No offense to Nimue, but she only had room for one woman of darkness in her life right now. Also every part of her being beyond her shell of an appearance was terrifying. All of that flew to the back of her mind at the sound a familiar voice. Her expresion softened, still tainted with sadness but distinctly glad to see the other. A light smile defied her condition. "...Well I believe so, anyway." Zelda replied. "Though I would say that it is a poor replacement for your company." she went on in a decidedly welcoming, if not somewhat wistful, tone. As Zelda said this, she telekinetically moved to gently close the shutters on her windows, plunging the room into darkness. A bit of light leaked around the window's edges, but it was dark enough that there was little doubt Zelda could not continue reading. You might call it ... twilight.
And then, at a little table beside Zelda's bed, a candle abruptly sprung to life with a tiny explosion of light and a little pop of decompressing air, granting the room a less harsh form of light with which to see each other. It wasn't entirely clear how Zelda had done that, but one could surmise that it was probably the same way she'd closed the shutters. Magic! "It's a very unusual book, a retelling of an old fable from the perspective of a princess kidnapped by a terrible beast instead of the hero who saves her." Zelda explained. "...I promise I'm not looking to it for inspiration." the princess quickly went on to add in a knowing, subtly humorous tone.
"But how are you faring in the wake of everything that's happened?" Zelda would finally ask in concern, not wanting to dwell on her novels for too long. As much as she they held a place in her heart, she doubted Midna would care for them nearly as much as she did. |
