All she wanted to do was sleep. Her body ached, her wounds were still fresh. Just what was that creature that appeared in Ordon? Or what was previously Ordon... There was hardly anything left of the small village. And the villagers... What had happened... It made her head spin, or perhaps that was just the exhaustion kicking in. However, she had to press on.
Ashenne had rushed back to the castle immediately after the creature of darkness was slain. She knew what was inevitably coming when she got back; she had directly igorned her Princess' orders and would just have to face the repercussions. In her mind, however, she was extremely bitter about it. Her face was stoic and she would take whatever was coming to her... But inside, she toiled, infuriated at the cowardice. She was a Knight of Hyrule, which meant helping and serving its people. How could she have retreated, knowing there were innocents and citizens there? Could she have really let them fall to their doom?
That and the fact that Zelda had to leave Keldric behind. Ashe found him down the path on the way to the castle. Perhaps Zelda could not carry him the entire way. Ashenne had a body built for combat and was not at all a small lady; despite her body aching and her injuries, she propped her Knight Commander on her shoulder and slowly trudged her way back.
With Keldric handed off to the skilled doctors and nurses of the court, Ashe could make her way to the Princess. She should have made it back to the castle by now. Perhaps only half a day had passed since the beast's slaying and Ashe's treck back to the castle. The other Knights looked at her in silence, curiosity and horror on their faces as they saw her bloodied armor, dirt-caked clothes and overall disheveled self.
Ashe managed to question one about the whereabouts of the Princess, to which he simply pointed in the direction of the throne room. Nodding curtly, Ashenne slowly limped through the large doors and up to the gathering circle of Knights. In the middle of it all was the Princess, whom Ashe looked at for a brief moment before gazing at the ground. She didn't want to look the Princess in the eyes.
"Your highness," she spoke as the group parted to let her through. MADE BY ★MEULK

Zelda was stunned, not by Ashenne's presence of course but by her condition. Her words died in her throat at the sight and a look of pity crept over her for a moment. She would have understood if the other had taken some time to take care of herself before addressing the gohma in the room. She herself had needed a bath and a medical examination before she could be fully certain she wasn't going to die. Yet, here Ashenne stood. Zelda took a deep breath and forced herself to abandon that train of thought, getting up to address Ashenne. She could not help but notice what the other was doing. Ashenne's body language undermined any respect she'd intended with her words. Did the knight believe Zelda would mistake what she was doing as a sign of guilt, or did she simply not care? The princess' gaze darkened with disappointment, but she chose not to further acknowledge the slight--deeply as it did offend her.
"...Welcome back, Lady Ashenne." Zelda began, watching the other carefully to observe her reaction. "Your actions in Ordon allowed us to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. By some miracle, we only suffered a single casualty. ...I'm afraid that the knight-captain was crippled by his injuries. In spite of everything that went wrong, however, I must admit that I am impressed. To be my guard is a noble duty, but you did not demonstrate the qualities of a guard when you ignored my orders. Rather, your actions embodied that of a heroine. ...Seeing these traits in you now, I cannot help but wonder if perhaps it would be a mistake not to put more trust in your judgement in the future." |

And it started. The Princess began speaking, and Ashe braced herself for what was to come. Would she be demoted? Kicked out of the Hylian Knights? She could barely hide it as she winced when the Princess almost coldly said her name.
But what came out of the Princess' mouth made her whip her gaze up. Blinking and dumbfounded, she stood there in awed silence as she listened to the Princess. She did not sound mad... But rather... she was receiving a bit of praise? At least Ashenne took it as such. Zelda made note of how she disobeyed orders and how Keldric sustained crippling injuries... So that was the verdict on his condition... Ashe stiffened up and suddenly became a bit more "Knightly." Her hand crossed over her chest in a salute of sorts.
"Thank you, your Highness. It was not my intention to disobey your orders, but when I saw there were still citizens, I knew I could not leave them." Ashenne bowed her head now. "I apologize for the disobedience, but do understand that my duty as a Knight is to protect the people of Hyrule. I could not let that... thing continue to terrorize more towns and cities."
Ashenne's steeled gaze landed on the Princess again. A small smile twitched at her lips. Maybe now she'd get more recognition... If only her father could see. "Hopefully there will not be another situation as such. But I would be honored to accompany you on any sort of mission once more." MADE BY ★MEULK

Zelda's eyes glimmered with recognition. Her expression brightened rather noticeably, albeit it might be hard to put a finger on what exactly had changed at first. She'd subtly started smiling, was the key difference. A tiny smile that could be so easily overlooked if one weren't paying attention to her face at the moment her expression shifted. "I cannot fault you for knowing your limits better than I... You are forgiven." Zelda relented, choosing not to voice any of the concerns she'd had at the time. "You never know. We may need more heroines in the future. The attack on Ordon was deeply disturbing and unusual, but the concern over what happened has not ended with the monsters defeat." the princess went on to remark in a thoughtful yet encouraging tone. There was still the matter of where the heck that thing came from. The fact that they'd never seen anything like it before seemed to indicate that something had changed for the worse. Could there be other threats out there? Was Ordon an omen of what was to come? She certainly hoped not, but it was hard to ignore the possibility when so much was at stake. |

Ashenne had not asked nor expected to be forgiven (though even if she wasn't, it mattered not in the end). The words tugged a smile to the corner of her lips. A heroine... She could get used to that title. In a way, she wanted another situation to arise where she could prove she was useful. Prove to her father that she had just as much guts and gusto as a man.
But that would be terrible, and so she shook those thoughts. At least Zelda thought she was heroic in this moment. Ashe's smile grew a bit more, but started to fade once she realized the Princess was still concerned. Ashe studied her for a moment, before pressing a fist into an open palm. "Well! If something else comes this way, we'll be prepared next time!"
She obviously was not a fortune teller and could not read the future...

"I hope so..." Zelda quietly relented, expressing a certain dissatisfaction with how she'd handled the encounter. As much as things had gone quite well, she didn't feel right taking credit for that. A moment's thought later, however, and her attention returned to an arguably more immediate concern with the present situation. "But in order to make sure we are as ready as we can be for the future, I feel that there is one more thing in need of tending to." Zelda would begin to request in a subtly playful tone, a very slight smile manifesting itself on her face.
"...You." Zelda would quickly continue after but a moment. It might quickly become clear where she was getting her amusement from. It was a rather simple concern compared to what they'd been through. "I could not help but notice that you came to me before tending to any of your own 'needs'. And while I can appreciate the sentiment behind your expediency, it is my firm desire... that you treat yourself to some love and care." Zelda went on to state, unable to wipe that tiny smile from her face. She's telling you to take a bath, Ashenne. "If there are any accomodations I can make for you, now would be the time to ask for them. I believe that it is imperitive that we make sure our heroes and heroines are in good health and spirits, should the need to address any similar threats arise." the princess finished. Any semblance of a bad mood seemed to have vanished, at least as far as her body language went. |
