[googlefont=Roboto] What I fear and what I've tried
Words I say and what I hide
All the pain, I want it to end
But I want it again
She tapped her fingers along the warped wooden table of the bar carefully. She wasn't quite sure what it was about today, but she found herself restless to the idea that the others were late. It was out of the ordinary, and she'd usually hear from at least one of them by now - aside from Telma of course.
She had been sitting at the table for about two hours now, sipping at her room temperature ale every now and again as Louise crept against her leg demanding to be pet. Her fingers laced within the feline's fur as she finally had enough. They weren't meeting today obviously, and didn't tell her; or something was terribly wrong.
Telma insisted she knew nothing of the sort, and so Ashei had decided to head out and find something better to do.
As she exited the bar and headed up toward the main hub of the city, she found herself wandering past the fortune tellers and magical merchants. She always found their crafts to be quite interesting, but magic was something she chose to stay away from. It wasn't that she didn't like it, but she was afraid of trying to control it. She would much rather hold something physically in her hand to tell if she can handle its strength or not.
Something was really catching her eye at one of the stands though - and it really wasn't even that impressive of an item. It was just a simple stone that seemed to glimmer and glow like a bio luminescent creature. She picked it up in her hand, and it felt warm to the touch. It was simple, cosmetic magic. And wow, she was enamored by it.
Of course, she felt the need to buy it. She held it in her hand tightly, the warmness relaxing her palm as she walked the alleys to head back to her small home as a group of kids began to run by.
Snatch.
"Hey! What the hell!?" Ashei growled as she quickly turned to face the kids who were running away. One of them had snatched the rock right out of her palm. Groaning, she quickly leaped forward to chase after them--gaining speed on them as she was about to be in arms reach when--
She fell back onto the ground with a loud exclaim in pain, rubbing her side carefully as she watched the kids disappear in the distance. She had run into someone, knocking them over with her own force as well.
"...Sorry." she murmured, looking down with a sigh. This is why she didn't buy things. Kids were grimy and stole everything.

In days of past, all he knew of castletown came in the form of rumors brought by others who traveled the country freely or fellow villagers that came back from delivering goods. And on his first trip there, he'd been more than a little curious to see all of the sights for himself. But alas, the timing proved difficult, what with having to return the borrowed cart and share the rupees with the man he'd delivering goods for. So this time, no matter how difficult recent events might have been on him, he felt determined to find a way to enjoy himself, if even only for an hour or two.
The blue cloak he wore over his casual attire allowed him to blend in fairly well. The hylian moved freely between the stalls, following the crowd and never delaying too long in one place. Smelling, tasting, feeling, and seeing it all brought a wave of good cheer that he desperately missed, and it proved easy to get lost in the moment.
His wallet could use to lose some weight, and an enchanted stone that glowed really did seem like the perfect souvenir to bring back to the swamp. Alas, he passed it up, only to find fate guiding him right back to it after a commotion stumbled right past him.
Children ran off why an older, larger man grumbled loudly over a female crashing right into him. Link winced slightly when the man nearly toppled on top of her, barely managing to curve his body to the side. Ouch, that wouldn't have been pleasant.
The thought hardly crossed his mind before he took off running after the ruffians that she'd been trailing behind. It took a few clever twists on his part and the use of several roof tops (the longshot he'd found submerged in swamp water really proved to be useful for navigating high ground) before he had the warm, shimmering stone in his possession.
Backtracking didn't take as long; he found a quicker, straight path back to the scene of the crime. Had it really only been a minute or two? It felt much longer. Pursuits had a way of doing that.
The large man stalled in the middle of his very loud, very vocal chiding of the female who had bumped into his, due to the blond cutting right in front of him with the glowing item in his open palm. "Is this yours, ma'am?" MADE BY ★MEULK

"Is this yours, ma'am?"
The voice was soft - one of kindness. As the glowing stone sat in the hand of the stranger, Ashei rubbed the back of her head to notice that the man she had rammed into was quickly back on his feet and scuffling away from her. She pursed her lips tightly, flushing in embarrassment as she looked up to the boy who went through the trouble of getting her cheap souvenir back for her.
"I uh..." her words fumbled for a moment, unsure what to say. She wasn't very good at talking to people - especially people who looked around her age! She always sat in the company of older, wiser men and women - scholars, warriors, and barmaids, of course. "Thank you," she finally responded though, slowly raising her hand to take the stone.
She looked over him for a moment - her eyes going down his appearance carefully to try and get a read on what kind of person he was. He was a traveler from what she could gather - one who either just returned to Hyrule, or was visiting. Hylians rarely lived outside of Castle Town though, so where he was from, she could not place.
Getting up from the ground, she dusted herself off before looking around sheepishly and trying to find words to say. She was horrible at small talk, but from the cloak to the tunic - she could tell that he at least was someone who knew his way around a weapon, or just enjoyed traveling.
"So are you from around here then?" she asked. "I don't think I've seen your face around the tavern... or really anywhere on the streets." She chuckled lightly and put the rock in her pocket. "I don't really see many people as young as us who take to traveling about anymore - most of them just become soldiers or farmers."

Just become soldiers or farmers...
It might not have reached his eyes like it used to, but the smile that curved his lips up appeared genuine nevertheless. The youth reached up to rub the back of his neck under the blue fabric of his traveler's cloak, feeling a bit of sheepishness rise up within him. "The most my face has been seen around these parts was when I brought a delivery not that long ago. It's only my second time to visit the capital."
News of the Ordon tragedy, he imagined, already spread throughout the land. Admitting he came from the village, or worse that he had been there during the encounter with a strange being, left his tongue feeling heavy in his mouth. How could he explain what he didn't fully understand without babbling like a madman.
A pause, then a curious tilt of his head. "Is the tavern here good? Where I'm from, there aren't a lot of options for eating or drinking outside of home or a neighbor's offering."
He had plenty of time to kill before needing to head back. It didn't hurt to make a good memory or two along the way. MADE BY ★MEULK

So he wasn't from around here after all, and her suspicions were confirmed when he had admitted that he had only visited the capitol once before. She nodded, taking note that he seemed slightly unsettled in some fashion - perhaps not because of their encounter, but because he had a long journey coming here. He inquired of the tavern, and she pursed her lips for a moment. So he really was new here. He probably just arrived, or barely had time to look around.
She smirked lightly before stuffing her hands in her pockets carefully, trying her best not to sound too proud or overbearing as she spoke. "I mean, there are definitely other places that are more popular I'm sure, but this place is cozy. And the owner, Telma, is a total sweetheart. They also have the best pumpkin soup that one of our guys brings back from his hometown when he visits."
She looked around for a moment, a sudden sting in her stomach making note that she had forgotten to eat today. "You're looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, yeah? I can take you there if you'd like."

"Would you?" The thought of pumpkin soup set his stomach into motion, reminding him it had been far too long since he last dined on anything substantial. Not for the lack of trying, either - numerous deku who brought him food made sure to entice him with familiar flavors and spices. It just didn't go down well, feeling like a ton of bricks in his midsection until the urge to throw it all up threatened to overtake him. One or two bites at mealtime hardly gave him enough strength to keep moving, and with the training he started to put himself through, it wouldn't be long until his body simply refused to function.
"If you don't mind, then, please. I'd like to see this place." Even if the food didn't agree with him (a mental note was made to at least try to finish a bowl, if for no other reason than to force himself to do so), there would be drinks and sights and smells that weren't familiar, and it made it worthwhile for that reason alone.
A gloved hand, covered with surprisingly smooth brown leather just past his wrists while lacking around his fingers, was offered in form of greeting. "Thanks. I'm Link. This place is a lot bigger than what I'm used to, so my only other plan was wandering blindly until something interesting happened. You saved me from wasting some time, ma'am." MADE BY ★MEULK

He seemed to be rather thankful of her offer to take him to the tavern, and she was getting ready to veer up and show him the way when he suddenly moved his hand toward her, palm forward as it held out with the offering of his name. She looked down at it for a moment, realizing that she had been completely rude and had forgotten to introduce herself.
When his he offered his name, and how she had made this visit much easier on him, she chuckled a bit, shaking her head with a shrug. "Trouble follows me, so be warned." With a swift movement, her hand took his, shaking it firmly. "Name's Ashei. Now let's get you something to eat."
Turning herself around, she started to stride down the southern road, keeping a close eye on Link to make sure he wouldn't get lost in the masses that constantly roamed the streets. After several twists and turns, she paused to make sure that the boy had kept up with her, before taking off into an alleyway and heading down a set of steps which led to a small, wooden door.
Opening it quickly, she peered inside, taking note that not much had changed since she had previously left.
"Well hello there, honey, back so soon!?" a woman's voice yelled over the sound of regular customers. "ASHEI YOU HAVE A FRIEND!?"
Oh god oh god oh god stop. Ashei's cheeks immediately flushed the moment Telma had announced her company to the world. Yeah, it was weird for her to socialize. No, it wasn't that weird of her to help someone out.
Giving a sheepish smile, she turned back to Link with an awkward chuckle, her hand scratching the back of her head slowly. "Uh.... just ignore her, she gets uh... really excited when me and other resistance members talk to anyone that isn't just us."

A lot could be revealed about a person by the way they shook someone's hands. He remembered many of the village elders telling him that ever since he could barely walk around on his own feet, and would launch into tales of their younger days and the people they shook hands with. Honestly, he'd always thought they were kind of full of it, but the older her got, the more he paid attention to it as well.
If Ashei's handshake was anything to go off of, he'd get along with her perfectly fine.
The inside of the tavern felt more comfortable than he imagined. They'd hardly made it through the door before another led Ashei into an apology, and despite himself, he couldn't help giving in to the urge to chuckle. "I'll take that as a good thing."
Wait... what was that she just said?
He didn't ask right away, instead taking the time to walk around and get a better look at things. The natural charm enticed people to come inside and if the scent in the air was anything to go by, to spend a fair bit of money on decent food and drink as well. Not a bad establishment to have in a crowded city with a castle backdrop.
Settling down on a stool, he lowered his cloak and ran a hand through his hair, messing it up a bit in the process. Considering the unruly strands already sticking to his ears, it didn't make that much of a difference. Then, in case it wasn't something to be said loudly, he quietly asked, "What do you mean by resistance?" She didn't mean to drop all the knowledge bombs for references he wouldn't understand - and she wasn't surprised that someone outside of the capital didn't know who exactly the resistance was (not that anyone inside really knew either). She paused in thought as she looked over to Telma, eyeing her to not badger the two of them with a million questions.
"It's not really anything... as dramatic as an actual resistance, I suppose," she started off, taking a seat next to him at the stool as she looked up to the board with different options for food. "But it's a group of guys I stick around. We're dedicated to studying ancient architectural monuments that either truly existed at one point, or are only heard of in legend."
Now that she thought of it, she wasn't really sure why they were called the Resistance in the first place - they didn't oppose any greater power or anything, and they weren't exactly a squad of fighters. "It's nothing crazy, we just get together once every couple weeks to bring more on what we've found in our research. We were supposed to meet today, but... I don't know why, but no one showed up."
Shrugging, she let it go for the time being, a glass being brought to the two of them with water until they had decided what they wanted to eat. "I'm guessing Rusl just got caught up in whatever is going on back at the village."

If he had been taking a larger sip of water, it might have been harder to breathe at the mention of Rusl. His mind whirled, returning once again (as it too often did) to that morning when everything disappeared from his fingers, falling to pieces like grains of sand. Had Rusl been outside the village? Did he make it out in time? Or did the unthinkable happen to him?
Bile rose in the back of his throat, burning the water all the way down to the pit of his stomach. For a moment he faltered, struggling with the desire to just tell someone about what happened, but his common sense battled with it. At least, he chalked it up to common sense and not some sort of foolishness that would bite him in the ass later for bottling it up until it poured out uncontrollably.
Schooling his tone, he kept his expression as pleasant as possible. "Sounds like you've got an interesting group here. The name immediately stood out, but thinking of it, I doubt an actual resistance would go around freely revealing themselves if they opposed the monarchy," he said with laughter in his tone of voice.
Remember; keep yourself in the present. It helped a little.
"What's the most interesting thing you've studied with the group?" Link's curiosity got to him. "I haven't really traveled far from my hometown before, but this is the sort of thing that I've always wanted to do. Get the chance to see the world and explore things. Find interesting relics of the past." MADE BY ★MEULK

All the pain, I want it to end
But I want it again
Ashei let out a small chuckle in response to Link's words with a nod, as she took a sip from the small glass that Telma had brought out. "We have no issues with our Queen, however we consider ourselves more of a resistance against... the soldiers, I suppose? Long story short, they're lazy. And cowardly. And we step up where they back away."
It seemed simple enough, and it definitely helped many civilians around town when they were dealing with issues that the soldiers couldn't be bothered by. Truly, she despised them, and wish they had better training.
His next question caught her a bit out of surprise - most people weren't really interested or cared about the legends of ancient architecture and their relics. She looked at him for a moment in a pause, before pursing her lips in wonder.
"Well, we've all taken a bit of interest in different places... but we think they are all connected somehow," she started off. "Personally, I've been doing a lot of research on the old Knight's Mansion at Snowpeak. Knights used it as a base during the Gerudo-Hylian war centuries ago, but... past that point was lost from recorded history. Many wonder if it's still there. I'd love to see it for myself!"
There was a glimmer of inspiration in her eyes as she thought about it - it was something she spent so much time researching, and despite little proof or anything leading toward it still existing, she knew there was still a chance.
"It's a shame that its far too cold to try going up there. Especially with how unpredictable the weather in that area has been lately... very strange blizzards."
Telma had returned to them, and as Ashei scattered through the limited options on the menu, she ended up getting her usual - the pumpkin soup. After Link had expressed his interest in continuing his travels, she thought for a moment about it.
"Well... you could meet a few of my friends sometime in the future. We travel all over. You could help us on some expeditions and explore to your heart's content."

His own order of pumpkin soup took no longer than a moment of hesitation to place in, wanting to at least glance over the options before deciding with certainty on something. Bread and ale would pair nicely with it, and to keep the mood as light as possible, he smiled at Telma to give her proper attention this time. "I've heard from a trusted source that the soup is some of the best in the world. I can't wait to try it, ma'am."
It was a good thing that he got those words out before Ashei opened up with the offer she did or the poor villager would've probably been unable to form anything other than a dumbfounded expression.
"That would be..." His suddenly dry throat deserved another drink of water. Or two, or three, as it ended up being. Even then, it felt like his tongue weighed a ton on the bottom of his mouth.
"That'd be amazing. Right now I'm staying with a friend, but I plan on coming to the market every weekend to pick up supplies." Hospitality from the deku ran deep, but it didn't stop him from wanting to pave his own way again. Besides that, from what he'd discovered, there were plenty of people looking for part time workers, and finding new ways to earn rupees might also allow him to pick up more skills.
While he didn't want to get ahead of himself too much, the excitement couldn't be misplaced no matter how hard he tried. "You said a mansion up on Snowpeak?" Wonder dawned in his tone. "How did you find out about it? Did you overhear someone else mention it or was it in a book you came across?" She didn't expect for Link to be so willing to accompany them on their journeys, but she couldn't help but feel a small bit of excitement at the idea. It'd be nice to have someone around her age to talk to on these journeys. Sure she had Cas, but he wasn't so willing to go on the more... trying expeditions.
"Wait really?" she finally said, almost as though his agreement was beyond her comprehension. "You'd really join us?" He had mentioned that he was staying with a friend and she immediately nodded. "Oh so you are staying here for a while then! Excellent. Are you good with a sword?"
She was painting scenarios in her head over and over of what their expeditions could look like in the future, and she was honestly just excited that someone was showing so much interest in their 'mythical mumbo jumbo'.
When Link had asked her about Snowpeak, her eyes had quickly switched from fixating their gaze on the soup to his eyes.
"How did you find out about it? Did you overhear someone else mention it or was it in a book you came across?"
She pursed her lips for a moment, thinking carefully on how to word this without sounding crazy. "Okay so... my father is a Knight. He knows a lot about Hyrule's history, as well as the traditions that knights follow. My family comes from an incredibly long line of knighthood, as well, and we have journals from ancestors who often made mention of this place. It's said to have been used as both training grounds for up and coming knights, as well as a base of operations during the Gerudo-Hylian war. Because there was so much fighting going on within the city, they needed somewhere secluded to properly plan without worry of ambush."
Taking a moment to breathe after her explanation, she tapped her chin in wonder. "I know that it existed. There is fact that it existed. What we don't know is if it still is there, or if it's in ruins. Whatever happened after the war, if it was in text, has been lost."

Come to think of it, there weren't many things he felt proud of in terms of personal accomplishments. He'd be able to count them off with the fingers of one hand - tending to crops in the field, getting animals to do what he wanted, being able to haul four sacks of potatoes at once, having enough stamina to round up a flock of missing cuccos, and being damn good with a sword despite not having a ton of formal instruction. That's why he snuck in a quick word, "I'm better with a sword than people would think I am."
The way Ashei answered him showed her underlying excitement, and that more than anything else stroked the own wanderlust in the pit of his stomach all over again. The thought of traversing a snow-covered mountain with gear and provisions, and old text, all in search of a relic from the past... how could someone not be interested in that? Even better if there were valuable treasures locked away inside of it, because that would be the moment a personal passion also become a viable way to make income, and having work that was enjoyable made the difference.
In the distance, the tolling off a bell nearly caused the man to choke on the spoonful of soup in his mouth. Link whipped his head around to listen a second time to make sure he counted right, then let out a muffled few words that were the weakest curse a person could utter. But hey, it counted, right? Sure it did.
"I'm sorry, I didn't realize-- Colin's going to be looking for me-- this soup is really good by the--" In his desperation to clamber up from the table, he nearly knocked the bowl right off. His cheeks stained a bright red shade from utter embarrassment as he fished in his wallet to pull out more than enough rupees to pay for both his and Ashei's meal thrice over.
Leave it to him to nearly be late for their meeting time!
With face still colored and a grin to boot, he clumsily offered a quick bow. "Next time I'm in town, I'll come here to visit."
And he would. But the reasons he'd come for at that time... would it be for the same reason he felt at this particular moment in time? Hard to say. But considering what Ashei would soon be going through between Kakariko's ordeal and that of castletown itself, and what he would go through during the royal summons, things were definitely going to be changing for all of them and many others as well. Her brow raised at the mention of being well with a sword, and she smirked lightly, crossing her arms with a chuckle. "Is that so? We'll have to spar some time. I'm pretty experienced with a sword, myself."
The two had continued their chatter for a moment as they ate their food, but ultimately their words had quieted and they were surrounded with the light ambiance of the chit chat around them. Awkward silences always bothered Ashei; whether it was because they were hard to start up more conversation, or the fact that they just had nothing more to talk about.
As the bells of the clock tower began to strike their notes, before Link had suddenly scattered about, looking around frantically as he pulled rupees out of his wallet. Her eyes nearly popped out of her sockets to see the amount he was throwing onto the counter, but before she could protest his kind gesture, he was already climbing out of his seat and saying his farewells.
"Oh--I mean--okay then--" she said, trying to keep up with his stammering words before looking back at Telma in confusion. She looked back at the youthful man who was making his way out of the tavern and she pursed her lips. "If you're ever around and the Resistance is here, but I'm not, just let them know that Ashei Vitalis sent you! They'll give you the details and send you my way if you're serious about traveling with us!"
As quickly as he got up, he was gone, and she was left in a bit of confusion, but ultimately knew how embarrassing it was to be late for a meeting.
"He seems nice," Telma sneered as she leaned over the counter with her bosom pushing against her bowl. Growing, Ashei immediately threw her spoon at the woman.
"I have a feeling he's going to be very useful for our research."
But not even a moment later, a letter was put into the palms of Telma's hands, and as she read it in silence, it dropped to the counter as she gasped, her eyes growing small.
"What is it?" Ashei asked, looking over the note carefully. Upon it was the news of Ordon's destruction. There was silence again.
"...I'm going. I'll find him, I promise."
