Three days ago, everything that mattered to him in the entire world vanished in the blink of an eye.
No, that wasn't right. Most everything.
Underneath a tall tree sat the blond Hylian, his back rigged and his head lowered a bit to stare listlessly at the campfire near his outstretched legs. An old pot, one of the few things he found in the remains of his home, simmered the stew inside it evenly, and he added an extra pinch of seasoning purchased from a traveling merchant to add some semblance of flavor.
They had to eat. They had to sleep. No matter how much his dreams haunted him and his stomach rebelled, he refused to let either of them suffer alone under the weight of the guilt they shared.
For Colin, he had been there. With others, reeling from the trauma of not being able to do enough. For Link, he had arrived too late. The cursed delivery to castletown would forever leave a crack on his heart.
He breathed deeply, gathering enough strength to glance over at the younger male. "It's done. Eat what you can, then eat another mouthful on top of it. We'll stay here until dawn."
And then? Then, they'd continue deeper into the swamp, in hopes of finding the palace. MADE BY ★MEULK

| lost in the playground late night nostalgia open the sky for me now Colin looked miserable. He was filthy from being covered in building materials, and having been nearly crushed to death by said materials. He didn't struggle with the idea of coming to a stop in the slightest -- because there was nowhere that Colin could claim he needed to be anymore. He was just a refugee that would have thrown away his life to his own hubris if nothing else.
Colin panted out of a mix of exhaustion and disappointment. His eyes gazed thoughtlessly into the dirt before him as he wrapped his arms around his knees for comfort. He felt numb. He wanted to be over the shock. He wanted to feel comfortable in knowing that there was somewhere to go, or something he could do to fix what had happened. Though, it just didn't seem like any of that was going to happen.
Eventually, his eyes wandered up to Link, impressed -- and almost offended how well he seemed to be holding up. Though, at what point did link ever seem to be distressed? He always acted like everything was going to turn out just fine -- like there was somewhere to go, or something left to do.
Colin's eyes eventually slowly trailed their way towards Link's general direction. He eventually decided to speak up about what was bothering him. Softly, he stated, "You guys looked like heroes out there."
Slumping into his knees, the Ordon boy told link of his own recollection of events. "I pushed beth out of the way, before the beam fell on me. I felt brave, but I would have been crushed, if something hadn't knocked me loose. I rose up out of the ashes, like a phoenix... and there you were. You -- and the Princess, and her Knights -- fighting some sort of demon thing... who would I be, if the Guardian Heir of Ordon wasn't fighting beside them. I'd of been the coward everyone said I was. I was so terrified I lost control. I stopped caring if I was safe -- because there was nothing to stay safe for."
His eyes closed as he hung his head, summarizing his confession with, "I feel like maybe that's something similar to what all of you must have been going through; knowing that this could be the end -- and that it was okay if it was. The important part was that you stood -- and you did it, right? 'Because, if you didn't... there'd be so much more you could lose. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just becoming my dad."

If he could bring himself to speak at that moment, the bitterness and regret battling with equal measure inside of him might have bit out something nasty and self-depreciating, because no matter how honored Colin's words might have made him feel in any other situation, a hero was the last thing he felt he looked like. What sort of hero let their home disappear before their very eyes?
Those precious days were gone. He often battled with his age--in his early twenties and lacking in things to show that his life had purpose--and used it both as an excuse and a reason, and now... it felt like he no longer possessed that shield. That comfort of home, of familiarity, of pushing things off until tomorrow, of waiting until something great occurred. Because it had, despite it not being what he ever imagined.
Men his age, what did they do? Have a family of their own? A successful career? A clear reason for waking up each day? If he had any of that and lost it, wouldn't that feeling be so much worse?
"You're you, Colin. Forever and always. Whether you follow in your father's footsteps or carve your own path in this country, that's up for you to decide. But no matter what, you'll always be you." There wasn't much comfort he could offer. A shoulder to lean on, his full support, and the ounces of motivation he could muster.
There was, at least, something to put pressure on.
"What you did--what we did--was enough. We couldn't have done anything more for Ordon. Not yet. I believe... that many others got away before things happened. Until we find them, we've got to keep moving on and living our lives." He reached over, clapping the lad firmly on the arm.
"And whatever you feel, whatever you think, don't for a moment blame yourself for not being able to do what you couldn't do. You showed bravery there that only few men could, and for what it is worth, I'm proud of you, Colin." MADE BY ★MEULK

| lost in the playground late night nostalgia open the sky for me now Colin hung his head, his tired eyes intermittently jumping across the ground as he listened to Links words. The visual of others fleeing Ordon to safety comforted him slightly. He exhaled through his nose, as his eyelashes drew closer together. Softly, he uttered, "... yeah, you're right."
As the evening breeze blew over them, the ripple in his clothing accentuated exactly how still he was being. His eyelids finally fell closed as he insisted, "You're probably wrong, but you might be right. We don't know what happened to them. No-one left in Ordon could have known -- but at least they might have had the same idea as us. Maybe they're heading to Castle Town to seek refuge. You just need to -- hope for the best."
Colin laid on his side, un-bundling from his huddle to get slightly more comfortable against the dreadful woodland ground they were camping out on. "You think we'll ever get it back? Do you think that once it's gone, we'll rebuild in their memory? Maybe if not us -- someone will? I think that'd be nice. I just hope someone survives to teach them our local culture. I hope the down doesn't die with us. I don't think I could handle that."
After pondering the mortality of an entire town, Colin found himself in a strange place between calm and distressed. He was handling his trauma by discussing it, instead of repressing it. Perhaps this was good for him; assuming he didn't begin to obsess over it. |

The thought of Ordon being left in that state for too long stung deeply at him, the picture burning itself into his memory far deeper than he liked. It battled with what he had always known the peaceful place to be, creating a stark contrast between the past and the present, and the uncertain future.
"Someone will," Link settled on. "Whether we go back... I don't know." Could they? Would it feel right? Did either of them really want to? He tried to imagine his home, surrounded by foliage and natural wonder, being lived in by another person. As much as that pained him, the thought of living in it again pained him greater. Sometimes returning to what once was just couldn't be done no matter how much the heart hungered and longed.
"Once we're back on our feet, we'll head to the castle. That woman who was there, if she's truly the princess, might be able to help. And if nothing else, I want to thank her." In the moment, his heart sank when she pulled out. But he hadn't known, and if she truly were nobility, then it changed things. Being grievously wounded, like her knight had been, would cause too much chaos in the court. She had to think of the majority before the minority.
Sleep tugged at him, fighting with the hunger pains. Pouring a bit in a bowl, he took to sipping at the thick stew, letting it rest in his wooden spoon for a bit too long each bite.
"What's a place you've always wanted to see?" Link asked. "We can go there. Anywhere." MADE BY ★MEULK

| LOST IN THE PLAYGROUND LATE NIGHT NOSTALGIA OPEN THE SKY FOR ME NOW Colin's eyes rolled gently to lock with Link's as he softly stated, "... I -- I don't want to go anywhere, Link."
His eyebrows twitched, wanting to move; wanting to express what he felt, but it wasn't something his face could show anyone in the world. "I just want my home back. I want the people I promised my life to as a deputy. I want them to live the lives that were stolen from them; and I'd pay with my life here and now, if I knew it'd undo all that hell we've been through."
Colin's face fell into his knees as he mumbled, "... if there was somewhere I can go, that I could be strong enough; somewhere I could become someone that could -- actually do the job I promised I would? Then yeah, I'll go there. If someone knows how to whip someone like me into something that could take on those strange beasts the way you did; take me there." |

His attempt to try to paint a brighter picture for the two of them, while filled with good intentions, had an undesired effect, and brought things back to a soft sullenness that permeated everywhere.
He wanted to say, "Your life has too much meaning for you to throw it away in an effort to bring back what is lost." He wanted to say, "All we can do is move forward from here." He wanted to say, "We can do whatever we want, whenever we want, and go or not go anywhere." He wanted to say, "It won't always feel like this."
But he didn't, because really, he couldn't. In the growing darkness of deku swamp, he could do nothing but put out the fire that he had built to cook their dinner, and slowly rise to his feet despite the aching in his bones.
"We'll reach the palace in an hour or two," Link said softly. He'd wanted to wait until morning, but after hearing the boy's words, getting there sooner would do them both a world of good. For now, he'd push him forward until he could do it without the nudge.
"Things may be lighter tomorrow."
They wouldn't. Not for a long time to come. ColinI'm cool with wrapping up angstfest here since so much is happening after this now ;; *nuzzles Colinbby* MADE BY ★MEULK
