 It was warm. Far warmer than she preferred it to be. Myrna didn't want to move. If she did then it would expend energy, thus causing her body to sweat. Sweating is gross. All she wanted to do was sprawl down beneath a cool and shady tree and ignore the existence of the summer’s heat. The sound of the buzzing cicadas only enticed her to indulge in the tempting notion of taking a nap. “Maybe I should visit Lake Hylia…”But traveling also took effort. Dammit. What she wouldn’t give to find a traveling caravan at this time! Wait, the last one she encountered, she ended up pilfering some ‘essentials’ to continue her own travels. They weren’t happy when they discovered she slipped away with a generous portion of their food. A girl's gotta eat too. But now it was time to face up the dreaded heat. Despite the complaints, it was truly a beautiful day out. Blue skies. Clear skies. One of the better days for traveling to be perfectly honest. No pelting rain or cold front winds blowing about. And so the fox girl trekked sluggishly on the road making her way onward to Lake Hylia. A determined look crossed her features. “Fresh water, fish and cool lakeside breeze, here I come~”

He too, was headed towards Lake Hylia. More because he had business there that he needed to take care of than to play. Rarely had any time to play, being a Warden. Wandering the land killing off monsters that was getting in everyone's hair. It was a dangerous way to make a living, but at least it kept him in decent shape. Got to see the world, see what it was like. Well, less the world and more Hyrule, but to a lot of people that was the world! It was... kind of depressing the more that he thought about it. There were the Black Lands to the west, but that was quite an unpleasant thing to think about wasn't it?
Of course, it wasn't long before he spotted the Minish and began to close the distance, not like it was hard. Compared to the sluggish trekking of Myrna, Alex had a particular spring in his step. Yes, it could be said that he was in fact, rather chipper, enjoying his time in the sun and enjoying what was left of summer before the nastiness of fall set in. Well, it wasn't entirely terrible. Autumn rains were quite lovely. The cold he could do without, but he figured that was what heavier gear was for.
"Rare for a Minish to be moving about so openly." He remarked as he caught up to her side before slowing his stride. Really, it wasn't hard to tell she was a Minish, with the fox ears and tail and such. It was just almost driving him a little bit nuts to have to move so slow. For a business trip, he seemed to have a lot of energy today. Maybe he could pass some of it off to her? "What's got you out here so reluctantly?" Well, it seemed reluctant, with that kind of gait. Really, and on such a beautiful day too! Oh look~ There was a man-spawn closing in on her. Wonder what he was doing out here by his little self? Humans don’t normally travel the lands by themselves. No, these ilk – much like the pointy-eared Hylians – typically traveled in packs. Safety in numbers. Either he was incredibly foolish or perhaps he could hold his own to travel by himself in such a manner. She tilted her head slightly looking him up and down. “Mmm. How curious, indeed.” She mused. “How curious as well for a human to journey by himself without a pack.” Myrna wasn’t quite sure how to handle this situation. But since he hasn’t shown any indications of hostility, she’ll humor the company… at least for now. One wrong move then it was time to blaze off. “Sun is not kind around this season,” she explained, “I’ve been informed Lake Hylia is best to escape the heat. And best fish around. Hylian Loaches were found there~ Have you heard, man-spawn? Do you have business at lake?”

So apparently she wasn't the oddity here, if her own words were anything to go by. As he kept his pace, he found it rather funny that apparently being a human made him the odd one. But she definitely didn't seem like a threat, so he was able to let his guard down a little. She didn't seem armed so what could she do? Well, aside from claw and bite him maybe. That wouldn't be so great, but he would just keep that to himself.
Traveling alone though? Without missing a beat, he simply answered her with amusement. "I'm not traveling by myself." He remarked, letting it sit for a moment as a coy smile took over. He wasn't alone, not out here, not at all. "I've got a newfound companion to keep me company." And even a Minish, that was rare! Let's see her argue that point.
Still her reason for going to Lake Hylia was just so... well thinking on it, it was something that would fit a Minish. Alex continued to keep up with her, using his staff for a walking stick. "I do, there's someone I'm meeting down at Lake Hylia." That was where he had last known Nerine to be anyway, so it was nice to be able to make the journey with someone to talk to. Other company, who shall go nameless, could be rather quiet at times. "I'll be fine though, most people know better than to bother with a Warden." He said with a rather confident air around him.
"That being said, I didn't know that the loaches were back already... or that they're even real." As far as he knew, they were a myth. In all his life he had never actually seen one of the mythical fishies. Might be nice to catch one while they were around - if they were real, and see how they tasted. It was always bass or something like that. To be honest, he was never a fan of fish, but he'd be willing to give a loach a try. "Planning to dive deep for 'em?" If he'd never seen one, then it was probably deep underwater anyway. Her fluffy vulpine tail swished once. Twice. Golden eyes flickered with curiosity and amusement observing the lack of caution and similar jovial delight the man-spawn appeared to display with keeping her company. Very strange, this one was. Why would he find delight in her company? “How charming. Are you always this articulate with every pretty face you meet? Or is it because I am Minish?” She asked. Aha~ So he was meeting somebody at the lake. That sounded like a pleasant journey actually. To travel however far away to return and meet with someone he once knew. Myrna purred a soft noise in the back of her throat at the thought. “Meeting someone? Friend? ... or perhaps a mate?” She flashed a fanged grin at the last point of her question. Though her expression of lighthearted amusement turned into confusion when he explained he was a Warden. Her brows furrowed trying to translate that in her mind. “Warden… what is a warden? Is that human thing?”Her expression returned to a determined look at the return of discussion the loaches. She licked her teeth flashing her fangs once more as she swished her tail. “Loaches are fickle. Come and go like seasons. They exist. Tasted few times as pup. Hope to catch one before winter. Food will be short when it gets cold.” Her sentences were short. A little gruff, but only because she was used to speaking to animals, not actual people. Humanoids were not exactly common in the woods... less they were poaching her kind. And she never interacted with the Kokiri in her time in the forest. “Deep diving… Never tried. Maybe would work? Must scout around lake first. Do you do this deep dive?”

Pretty face? Well, wasn't that quite the thing to label oneself with? On the flip side, he couldn't really disagree with her. A young and soft looking face accentuated by raven hair and fox ears. Really, it was no point in denying that she was beautiful Must've been the talk of whichever village she came from. "Maybe it's both. Maybe one feeds into the other and I can't resist the fluffy tail." He said, tilting his head towards her swishing vulpine tail. It did look really fluffy... maybe just getting to pet it at some point wouldn't be that much to ask, would it? So soft looking.
"But to answer your question, just a friend." At least he thought Nerine was a friend. Didn't really get to know her that much but she seemed to be a sweet person. Helping her out from the Bokoblins seemed to get him a fairy friend for life, and he was just doing his job as a Warden. Which... "Wardens are volunteers, mostly human, or Man-Spawn as you call us, that essentially travel around Hyrule, exterminating monsters where we find them." They usually got paid for it too. Travel, see the world, and save everyone you could. The adventurer's dream, really.
But, okay, so if she didn't know what it was, did that mean they weren't in the deep? Alex's eyes flickered again to the swishing tail. Okay, so a swishing tail meant that she was curious or excited or... something. He continued along with her, rubbing his chin. "I personally wouldn't. There are monsters in that lake that are better left undisturbed." He'd heard the tales of the great purple behemoth fish living in the deeps, the fish of all fish and the aquatic jerks of all aquatic jerks. His eyes seemed to blank out for a moment at the thought of that. Myrna flashed him a fanged grin. It would seem exotic features are eye-catching to other races of Hyrule. Though she will not deny some man-spawn are more pleasant to the eyes than others. This one with golden hair accentuated with honey-colored eyes was no exception either. Nevertheless, she felt a swell of pride hearing him confess he found her tail fabulous. She worked very hard to make sure it was as soft and fluffy as it looked. Speaking of which, it was due for a thorough brushing later~ Food for thought when she had a moment of break. It was still a curious thing. Meeting someone so far away when they could travel together. Friends, at least to the vulpine, were companions who stayed together. Hunt together. Hyrule was a lot bigger place than she could ever imagine. “Do all friends travel around like yours? Do you have just man-spawn friends?” she couldn’t stop herself from asking. “Only knew other Minish tribes. Didn’t travel far. Least not until recently. This land is new. Strange. Man-spawn, and pointy-ears plenty in strange machines of travel pulled by horses.”She listened to his explanation on what a Warden was. One who fights against monsters? Travels the land to ensure its safety? “Man-spawns actually risk their lives to protect land?” she asked with a quirked brow. “Why? What reason do they have? What do you get for protecting lands?” She wasn’t asking to insult him. She was genuinely curious and didn’t know how man-spawn society worked. She tilted her head slightly to the side when he suddenly got lost in thought. Apparently deep diving is not something surface dwellers should tread? Perhaps there is something bigger and badder beneath the waters nobody should dare grab? Or maybe a big fish? Fish mean more meat for winter though. “Bad fishing experience… uh… man-spawn?” she asked with a pause. Right. She never really asked for his name. She did recall they did use naming systems.

Well, the answer would usually be no but there were some. Some he didn't know too well, some he had lost contact with, some who never really bothered to see how he was doing. He kept a straight face as he nodded. "Human, yes. But there are Fairies and Hylians too." Yes, perhaps he could say that Nerine was a friend. Were the Wardens friends as well? Perhaps they were comrades, but to call them friends might be a bit of a stretch. More's the pity. Perhaps at some point he would have to meet some of these... were there even other Wardens? Something to look into. Rather, perhaps he would make this fox girl a friend.
She was weird though. Fighting over... well, no, that made more sense than it should have. "More what's on the land." He tried to explain, at least for him anyway. For others it was different. "Say someone came to your home one night, intent on destroying it. What would you do?" The answer was most likely that she might defend her home. It was like trying to keep everyone's homes safe, that was how the Wardens operated. If it was said that the Hylian Knights had Zelda's best interests in mind, then the Wardens had Hyrule's best interests in mind.
But, well, there were problems with that. "There are those who would fight for the land itself. People who live... better than you or I." People who really didn't care much about who lived on the land, as long as they swore fealty to the lords of the area. It could get... problematic at time. The high lords certainly loved to play their games.
"The purple behemoth of the lake..." Was the only clue he gave as his gaze seemed to lose its focus. Alex went quiet again for a bit as he continued to accompany his newfound companion. She might have to catch his attention again. EVERYONE'S THE FOOL THEY SEEK
Hyrule was truly a vast and diverse place. Bigger than Myrna could even begin to imagine. The thought alone was pretty intimidating to the fox kin. To just think, she was making head way across the expanse to get to Lake Hylia was no easy feat. The bright side to all of it though was being able to learn more about the world. Man-spawn was very helpful in that sense. “Yes. The pointy-ears. You call them ‘Hylians’, I believe is common term. Fairies come out of forest domain too? World is very big. Strange too. Learn much from Man-spawn today. Very kind of you to help Myrna understand world better.” She gave a firm nod of her head. Maybe she would find Minish roaming around these parts? Golden eyes flickered softly when Alexander tried to explain to the best of his ability on he meant. Though his phrasing was probably poorly made. Myrna’s lips thinned into a straight line as she narrowed her golden hues at the human. “Like poachers invade safe haven?” she said. Her voice almost going guttural and near animalistic. “If that case, then I would try to defend home. But Minish have own source of protection in woods too… though only in bigger settlements.” There was a bitter tone in her voice at explaining. The Minish Sentinels only protected villages and tribes that were closer to Ordon. Not so much in Faron. So she could understand a little about territory disputes. The other part of his explanation was pretty confusing. She wasn’t sure what to make of it. Then again she hasn’t had to deal with many people in higher power. To Myrna, mother nature was the one and true entity in power over their lives. So she focused on when Alex suddenly got lost in his thoughts. A purple behemoth in the lake? What in the world? She tilted her head slightly to the side. “Man-spawn? Man-spawn,” she called out. She went over to him and poked him on the arm. “Are you okay, man-spawn? There are no monsters here. Wake up. Don't pass out from the heat.” | |

He was brought back to the world of the living when Myrna began to poke him. She felt soft. He blinked once, blinked twice, then he looked at her for a moment before his pupils seemed to go back to their regular size. Nothing major, just coming out of a good old thousand yard stare. "I'm fine, I'm fine. Just... reliving the past." Yes, an awful incident. Fucking fish monster. "The purple behemoth, if we're going there we need to find some way to kill it, for the good of all." This creature was his arch nemesis whenever he visited that lake. He pounded a fist into his palm, it was personal.
As expected though, she would defend her home. Not because of the land, but because as she said it, it was her home. Where she lived, with people that she cared for... he thought. "But yes, exactly. It's not the land you're defending, it's your home, the people living in and around your home." That's what the Wardens protected, that was what they set out to keep safe, unlike the Hylian Knights. The Hylian Knights didn't really do much so long as Zelda was kept safe, then it wasn't their problem. Indeed, the divide between the Wardens and the Knights could be rather deep at times. Something to be fixed~
He tilted his head to the side as he kept up with his newfound companion. He had to admit she was growing on him fast. Strange way of talking but it was endearing in its own way. "Don't you have the Sentinels?" Maybe something to get her talking just a bit so it wasn't always him blabbering on about something. This ‘ purple behemoth’ he keeps going on about must’ve been a formidable prey. He even went as far as saying that it must be killed. How dangerous could it be? Considering that it was in what would be water then probably more than Myrna could imagine. Hyrule truly was a big place. Dangerous one at that too. “I guess we must be prepared for what may come,” she nodded her head. “Be very careful.”Myrna remained silent as she registered how the man-spawn explained it. Home was something to defend. What if she didn’t have a home to defend anymore? Family or friends to stave off opposition from? Try as she may, she couldn’t find the answer to that question. It eluded her completely. “The woods are not all united,” she explained, “Sentinels protect their territory. Deku protect theirs. Kokiri and fairies the same. We acknowledge powers of one another, but never under unity. Pride is strong, culture we take great value in. Sentinels…” Couldn’t protect her tribe. She bit her lip to prevent saying too much. Careful words picked out. “… Only pertain to protecting Ordona.”It wouldn’t be long before she could pick up the faint scent of lake water. They must be drawing closer to their destination. She couldn’t wait to hunt for the Hylian Loach. “Scent of lake is close. So are the Guay. Annoying birds.” | |

Yes, careful was the word. The reality is they had to be clever and lure it out of the deep to where maybe they could beach it or something. From there, then they could just perhaps mob the damn thing to death. Still, the rest of her explanation was something he hadn't expected to hear. Really? So the division wasn't just the humans or even Hylians? It seemed that all the races were divided amongst each other into certain factions. They looked after themselves primarily, but would occasionally help out when properly called. This was a strangely comforting thought to Alex; it made them just that much more familiar to him, and he smiled.

Bigger beasts try to eat us when not careful.” It was the risk of traveling. Nature was all about survival. More often than naught it was not the kindest reality anybody had to face. Something did occur to her though. Myrna looked back to Alexander curiously. “By way… Does man-spawn have name? Or are you one that doesn’t have one?”If all Minish were like her? What did he mean by that? She blinked her golden eyes at him confused. Minish were just as different as humans and hylians. Different colors and different behavior due to whatever animal they represented. Strange man-spawn. “Am I first Minish you met? I hope Myrna make good impression.”Asking about what the lake smelled like earned Alex another strange look. She looked back over to the road where she continued to pick up the scent. “Water.” It was the most straight face answer ever to come out of her lips. “Like air, but purer. Fresh. He'd never introduced himself? He looked at Myrna, absolutely stunned that he had never introduced himself to her. "Alexander Elessar." He quickly corrected with a chuckle, clearly embarrassed by this oversight. Really, the fact that he had forgotten basic decorum over something like this was definitely a sign that perhaps the wild was starting to get to him. Perhaps he would just take it as a sign that Myrna's company was so enjoyable that he had simply forgotten some things, getting so immersed in it all. Yes, that was a much better explanation. It was flattering to her, and far less embarrassing to him. So he would just go with that explanation and that was that.
But yes, she was the first Minish he'd ever met. So he gave a pleasant nod with a smile. "You're one of the better people I've met in general during my life." Especially since he became a Warden. People hired you to kill monsters but there was usually some complication. There was also a lot of times where they tried to back out of payment. He could understand actual hardship, truly he could. He gave breaks where he could, but there were a lot of times where people were just being assholes about it and figuring that just because Wardens always went around killing monsters, that they didn't need money to do it.
Still he'd gave his head a tilting nod in a manner that could be read as "yeah okay that was a stupid question." Of course it was going to smell like water, and now he was starting to smell it as the sparkling water came into view. His brows perked up, it was always a pretty sight, no matter how much he came here. The sun glistening off the water was something that gave the world its natural beauty. He looked at the Minish beside him. "Well my foxy friend, are you ready to catch your loach?"
